Habits for the Holidays
By: Jon Osumi
The Holiday season brings fellowship and good cheer as well as temptation. Different personalities handle the temptation in different ways, but following some simple guidelines can help from straying too far from the discipline that has gotten us this far in our health.
Be sure to maintain your water intake: water is our lifeline and the typical holiday beverages (alcohol and coffee) can quickly dehydrate the body.
Eat before you go to a party: Very often when we are hungry, we eat faster and larger volumes. A solid breakfast and lunch on the day of a party can help reduce the urge to overeat.
Maintain your physical activity: Don't eliminate your chance to move during these tempting weeks of winter. Brisk walks with family and loved ones serves multiple purposes.
Try different alcohol drinks: Calories from alcohol drinks tend to store in the abdomen and overweight bodies gain weight easier with alcohol consumption. Experiment replacing beer, cider, Bailey's, and/or Kahlua with wine, bloody marys or spirits with diet mixers instead. This will greatly reduce your calorie intake.
Try non-traditional egg nog: A low fat egg nog recipe will cut down on the calories of the standard egg yolk/thick cream ingredients. There are plenty of low-fat egg nogs or even soy nog!
There is no law that says maintaining discipline means not having any fun. Try incorporating at least one of these tips this year if you find yourself in tempting situations.
