Is Lap Band Surgery for Me? - 7 Things to Consider

Here are 7 tips that answer some of the most frequently asked questions of those exploring lap band surgeries:

  1. With a band, everything we have always known about how to lose weight finally works.
    Diets work, we just haven't been able to stay on them. With your lap band this can be much easier.

  2. Finding the right surgeon is important.
    The first year after you get your lap band, you should plan to see your surgeon anywhere from four to twelve times. You want to feel comfortable going into the office after surgery as many times as you may need.

  3. Don't underestimate the adjustable nature of the band.
    Having your lap band "tightened" or filled to help with portion control is one of the keys to successful weight loss.

  4. You can eat a wide variety of the foods you love with a band.
    You can finally learn the art of dining and enjoying every bite of food at the same time that you are achieving permanent weight loss. It is true that certain foods can be difficult for us to eat with a band. Bear in mind that each person is different. The most common foods that may present difficulty are such things as bread, rice, pasta, steaks and chops, and to some extent, fibrous fruits and vegetables.

  5. This life-changing decision really impacts spouses, partners, and those close to you.
    The important people in your life can be there to support you through the entire weight loss surgery process. Remember, you will be changing quickly and that means lots of change for those closest to you. This may mean that the eating habits of everyone in your household changes as a byproduct of your surgery. Make sure they get educated as you do.

  6. Learn from others who have lap bands and who have been successful.
    Use all of the support you can find. Go to weight loss surgery support groups. Find a mentor. Don't try to achieve this weight loss on your own. Statistics show that people who attend support groups and regularly see their surgeons have better results than those who do not.

  7. If you decide to have a lap band, prepare for surgery.
    There are many things you can do to get ready, and many things you should have on hand, so that when you come home from surgery, you can start your Banded Living journey free of stress.
