LapBanded Living - How Much Rest Is Required When Exercising
By: Jon Osumi
When we begin any exercise regimen we are usually committed to it 110%. We schedule our workout days and times, and try to add more time and more intensity as quickly as possible so that we can achieve the desired results. It is natural to think that if a little exercise is good, then a whole lot more should be better right? Not necessarily.
Exercise is only the stimulation that triggers the body to respond (or not respond depending on how hard you are working). As a rule of thumb, the same body part should not be stressed more than once in a 48 hour period. Once stimulated, muscles need recovery time to first repair the minor damage caused by exercise, and then to rebuild to handle the next source of stress. We tear it down in order to build it up. This takes time.
To take this thought further; the rebuilding of muscle ONLY happens during the REM cycle of sleep when and if proper nutrition is available. This adds the other form of "rest", i.e. SLEEP, as well as the nutrition component.
Keep in mind, exercise places a demand on not only the muscles, but also the nervous system. If these bodily systems are tired, they will not have the capability to improve.
In summary, only exercise a particular muscle group every other day and be sure that you get an adequate amount of sleep and proper nutrition if you are working on building muscle with an exercise program.
