Lap Band Success With Exercise - Getting To The Core of The Issue
By: Jon Osumi
Strengthening the core is a benefit of exercise that pays dividends long after the exercise session is over. Does it matter if the core is worked early or late in the workout? YES, it does matter.
The core has several functions:
- Maintaining posture;
- abdominal support;
- flexion/extension/rotation at the waist;
- protecting the spine.
This may be the body part that multi-tasks more than any other. Therefore, it is VERY important to make sure each workout not only strengthens the core, but also properly recruits it for support. My opinion is that we should exercise the core LAST in your strength-training workout. The main reason being that we need the core to be strong and effective in maintaining perfect posture during all movements. Many exercises place strain on the spine, particularly the low back. With a strong, fresh core, maintaining alignment will keep the spine safe and in proper position while the arms, legs, and torso are exercising. After your work out of all other body parts is 'finished', then you have reached the best time to fatigue the core. Posture habits are formed and maintained during exercise; good or bad. A tired core can actually contribute to poor posture habits and even worse, injury. Along with building strength, exercise should re-enforce good posture habits and correct poor posture habits.
