Lap Band Success - Lift Your Chest When Exercising
By: Jon Osumi
Printer-Friendly Format

Posture is one of the MOST important elements of proper exercise form.  The posture that is habitual during exercise typically becomes the 'position of comfort' our bodies will return to when tired.  This position of comfort can be trained, but it takes attention and consistency.  Imagine you have a headlight on your chest.  With proper posture, your headlight should be shining the light forward, not down.

As gravity takes it toll over the years, our posture tends to round forward to the point that the headlight is pointing down.  Try to make a conscious effort when exercising to keep that chest lifted during any movement, seated or standing, to develop proper posture habits.  Take a moment before you begin any set to take a deep breath and notice your position, engage your core, lift your chest and get that "headlight" pointed in the right direction.

The brain does not know the difference between good habits and bad ones; it only knows which habits are repeated frequently.
