Lap Band Surgery - Who to Tell and Who Not to Tell
By Gloria Samuels

Deciding who to tell and who not to tell about your decision to have weight loss surgery can be difficult for many reasons.  This is a very personal decision; there is no right and wrong answer.  The key is to find what is right for you, and understand that once you've told people about your decision, you can't take it back.

Some people choose to tell everyone they know and meet.  They are proud of their decision to take charge of their health, and enlist those around them to cheer them on along their journey.

Other people chose to tell only a select few; often a few close friends or family members.  This is often because:

  • They've dieted many times before and may be tired of people watching them and judging them
  • They failed so many times, it may be hard to accept that this really is different. Many of us are still afraid of failure
  • They're concerned about any stigma associated with weight loss surgery
  • They know that certain people in their lives will attempt to sabotage their efforts
  • They've found the courage to commit to surgery and don't' want to hear people trying to talk them out if it

Again, there is no right and wrong answer here.  The only thing we've learned for sure is that it's in your best interest to think hard about who to tell and who not to tell.
