Preparing for Lap Band Surgery - What Tests Are Frequently Ordered For Medical Clearance
By Sandi Henderson
People exploring or preparing for lap band surgery frequently ask what medical tests will be required in order to be cleared for surgery.
Every surgical practice will require some medical testing before performing a procedure on you. Every practice has different requirements, and based on your unique history, you may be required to have additional testing over the "standard" testing. For example, many practices require an electrocardiograph (EKG) for their surgical patients. However, if the surgeon determines that he needs more data than the EKG provides he may order a stress test, or refer you to a cardiologist for further evaluation and/or testing. All of this is done with your best interest, health and safety in mind.
Below are some standard or typical tests that many practices require:
- Blood work
- Chest x-ray
- Upper GI swallow
- EKG
- Nutritionist consult
- Psychologist consult
- Clearance by your primary care physician
